100 Lotus Flowers

2009: 100 Lotus Flowers taking me through a transition in my life. Each flower is a message which brings me closer to the goal. I try to come to terms with myself, and be myself. What messages do the flowers hold?
2013: What is the goal? I no longer know what it is, except for reaching the 100. But the 100 was not supposed to be the goal itself, but rather help reach the.....the.....I am lost, honestly lost. Everything I was striving for has diminished in importance. I do not know what to strive for. I think striving for anything now is pointless....but I will keep drawing and painting.
2014: A renewed sense of purpose, things seem to be falling into place.

100 Lotus Flowers, 100 points of healing.

Twenty-fourth Lotus Flower

Twenty Fourth Flower - Samantha Rochard - Mixed Media
On your way through the path
Find time to enjoy things
Cultivate a sense of abundance
To make it quite enjoyable.

Its always important to cultivate a sense of abundance, no matter how things may be going. Simple abundance can be found in things like a beautiful box of tea, little wild flowers, lots and lots of library books. Even a trip to the craft store for beads and sequins (which could end up on a lace pillow.... :)) can bring a sense of abundance. Enjoy the little things......

Twenty-Third Lotus Flower

Twenty-Third Lotus Flower - Samantha Rochard - Mixed Media

Twenty Third Flower's reflections revealed that
There is more to a symbol than just a mere coincidence
Learn to hear the language of the birds
and new life will reveal itself.
The universe speaks to each of us in symbols. Most times, because our minds are focused on something else, we do not notice the synchronicity that is playing out. The Lotus flower has a representation in many religions. In looking through Hindu mythology Brahma was born of  a lotus flower, which grew out of Vishnu's navel. The navel chakra is where you burn old negative aspects of the past, and gain the power to command and manage your life successfully. It is where the strongest sense of self is stored. It is the chakra of self esteem, will power, transformation and personal growth.............hmmmmm....... mere coincidence that I should discover it truth in using it to transform my life??? The universe alone knows........

Twenty-second Lotus Flower

Twenty-second Lotus Flower - Samantha Rochard - Mixed Media
The more the mind gets entrenched
 into an ideology,
The stronger the ideology becomes.
The more the artist creates on one particular theme,
The faster the images on that theme flow.

I remember reading about a discussion in creative development. In seeking perfection there are two paths. One path is to obsess over the first piece, and will re-work it until it is perfect. The other path speaks to  creating freely and quickly and letting each work stand on its own.
An experiment was done with two potters; each following one of the paths to perfecting the object. It turned out that the second method gave more insight and led the potter to begin creating extraordinarily beautiful pots after completion of the process. The other potter had to start from scratch each time. The repetition process drove home the mistakes and taught the potter what not to do. We must allow ourselves to make mistakes, for this is how we learn.
Creative flow comes from repetition.

Twenty-First Flower

Twenty First Flower - Samantha Rochard - Mixed Media

Twenty First Flower  pointed out an energy.
When the mind is focused on an issue,
It's theme begins to pour into your experience
Affirming your already-made decision.

A funny thing about the mind - it is great at finding affirmations for beliefs. Mine has started pointing out "signs" all around me. And I put signs in inverted commas because once the mind has...well "made up its mind" about a "truth;" it begins to seek confirmation from all over that it is correct in adopting this truth.
So it was inevitable that I begin to "see" Lotus Flowers in the strangest of places. The theme kept popping up in wrought iron gates, packaging on products, stained glass windows....... I thought too, how in Classical art and architecture the aim of the creative piece was to bring the viewer / visitor to a closer connection with deity.... we really tend to neglect the spiritual part of ourselves these days.....maybe we do not listen to it enough.

Twentieth Lotus Flower

Twentieth Lotus Flower - Samantha Rochard - Mixed Media

Twentieth Lotus Flower speaks about perfect Divinity
Which can only be found in being true to two
Perfect Earthly Desires
and Perfect Divine desires
of YOUR heart...... no one else's.

Somewhere I read that the Spiritual Path for our era is the Middle Path. In creation stories there first is the one, then the two, which create the three. While this has so many meanings on so many levels; on the individual level I liken it to this. A person has two aspecst, the earthly manifested aspect, and the spiritual aspect. From these two aspects, there can be three relationships. Does the earthly aspect dominate the spiritual? Does the spiritual aspect dominate the earthly? Or do the two work in a beautiful balance? We cannot resolve ourselves if either one holds dominion over the other and squashes the other aspect's desires- for in that instance we are denying our true selves. The middle path is the acceptance of the two aspects within us, and the understanding that these two in balance create that which is the true you.

Nineteenth Lotus Flower

Nineteenth Lotus Flower - Samantha Rochard - Mixed Media

Nineteenth Lotus Flower
The insertion of a new direction
Puts a whole new perspective on a theme.

I really love this one. It seems so spiritual, so meditative. There seems to be an energy that flows around the piece, carrying you on a journey. It pulls you in and draws you out at the same time too.
A while back I became interested in Sacred Geometry, and was researching some Islamic decorative patterns. The designs from these artists begin as geometric patterns, and then the artist attempts to create a hidden rhythm from the shapes.
"Islamic Design can be thought of as a form of visual music; the repetition and rhythm of its motifs establish an inner sense of balance and act as a visual extension of the invocatory remembrance of the Divine." - Islamic Design - A genius for Geometry - Daud Sutton

Eighteenth Lotus Flower

Eighteenth Lotus Flower - Samantha Rochard- Mixed Media

Eighteenth Lotus Flower asks to seek
Your center.
Cushion this with growth from within
Guard the circle with your intent at all corners.

Its been four weeks approximately since I started this project. Have I found any difference in my psyche? Yes, but I must say that the most difficult hurdle was getting over the fears that I had...all the "what if's" that may have come and spoiled the ride. Now that I have "detoxed" somewhat from the fear, from the issue and from the previous life, I cannot believe that I ever lived a life that I find so abhorrent to me. No.... that corporate life was never for me.....the mere suggestion that I may need to go back makes me cringe. Faith keeps me moving forward. Faith, and the conviction that I am doing the right thing for me.

Seventeenth Lotus Flower

Seventeenth Lotus Flower - Samantha Rochard - Mixed Media

Seventeenth Flower says let loose,
Find your inner child, the fearless experimenter.
The part of you that looked at life
with eager wonder....
wanting to try anything and everything.

Sometimes this project has me feeling like a kid again. I remember my love for colour...clashing competing colours that lit up the whole page. I remember creating for the love of it, not caring how it came out. Isn't that what we are meant to do? There is a big weight on your shoulder when you are creating for other people, and not for yourself. So if you look at stuff here and think.." Thats a load of...." or " She calls that art??? " That's what it is to me...... so there.. *sticks out tongue*
And I shall continue shipping merrily up to 100!

Sixteenth Lotus Flower

Sixteenth Lotus Flower
Sixteenth Flower calls for completion
No matter our feelings about the issue
Complete it, finish it and move on.
End it as nicely as you can and move on.

End it as nicely as you can. Finish it to its completion, and end it nicely as you can. No...its not about a relationship.....or is it?
There are two thoughts here. One is of paintings that I did not like, and felt unhappy with. Two of them I left for years, thinking they were finished, only to pick them up later and just know what to do to make them great! This Sixteenth Lotus Flower may be one of those....I do not feel happy with it. It feels like a step backward. But bound by the rules of this project, where all work is valid to the project horrible or no.... I had to post it.... and show it no matter how uncomfortable I feel.

Fifteenth Lotus Flower

Fifteenth Lotus Flower - Samantha Rochard - Mixed Media
Fifteenth Lotus Flower,
Another Balance number.
Divine Energy and Divine Grace
Sometimes, just being is enough.

I am resisting the habit of beating up on myself. I am at a point where the echoes of the nay-sayers occasionally reverberate through my brain. Shush.... I say to them......shush......you only see what you see. You do not see what I bliss.
Having been told, and lectured, about the futility of being an artist I no longer wish to hear you. I see it around me. I see people who have followed the same path I wish to follow and are comfortable within themselves. So shush.....and let me be. When I look back on my life, I wish to say that I explored every option, lived every dream that I had, and enjoyed life to the fullest of my talents.....shush...... I am creating. I am what I am........and that's enough.

Fourteenth Lotus Flower

Fourteenth Lotus Flower - Samantha Rochard - Mixed Media
Fourteenth Flower reminds me
To seek balance in life
And Balance in Self.
This has been lacking as I have been living for others.

Have all my decisions been my own? Have I been compromising at the expense of myself?

Thirteenth Flower

Thirteenth Flower- Samantha Rochard - Mixed Media
Thirteenth Flower is confident
that the center is perfect
At peace with itself
It radiates with balance and harmony
And exalts in the beauty of all things

Continuing with the configuration of six, this lotus flower is surrounded with a border taken from the designs used in henna body art. This lotus flower is especially pleasing to me because of its proportions...they seem perfect in my eyes somehow. Its center, perfectly round and pure white. Peace is at the center, a surety that I am heading in the right direction.

Twelfth Lotus Flower

Twelfth Lotus Flower- Samantha Rochard- Mixed Media
Twelfth Flower asks us to make one small change
Tweak just one thing to your liking
See if it takes you along a pleasant road.
If it doesn't; you can always turn back!

....and so I tweaked one thing. I changed the number of petals to a configuration of six. Plato always remarked that the spiritual essence of anything that is manifest can be reduced to a number. According to one "Symbols" expert; the number six signifies :
Six represents harmony, balance, sincerity, love, and truth. Six naturally reveals solutions for us in a calm, unfolding manner. The spiritual meaning of number Six also deals with enlightenment; specifically "lighting" our path in areas we require spiritual and mental balance. Sixes beckon us to administer compassion and consciously choose forgiveness in a situation.

Hmmmm...coincidence or no? Seeking balance indeed.

Eleventh Lotus Flower

Eleventh Lotus Flower - Samantha Rochard - Mixed Media
Eleventh Lotus Flower says that,
In seeking New Direction,
We sometimes must go back to a point of happiness.
Then we branch out in a different direction.

......which is what I did with this one. The last time I created with free-flowing ease...I mean really with no thought of finishing in mind was back in 1993 or so. At that time, there was a youth art exhibit organised by some big company; I cannot remember who. I do remember showing a host of black and white drawings, most of which were like the flowers depicted inside the petals here, and some crosses...lots of crosses. I had given each visitor who came to my corner, a black paper rose.
I really felt alive then......

Tenth Lotus Flower

Tenth Lotus Flower - Samantha Rochard - Mixed Media

Tenth Lotus Flower exalts the spirit
Makes love to it and carries it to the next level
The first threshold of ten has been reached
Do not look back on pass issues
Move forward in confidence.
My heart swells. As I work on these, as I spend my days. I am confident that right here is where I need to be. It is a connection to the inner me and outer All. I look upon this work and laugh with delight. Especially at Tenth Flower, that mark of a turning point in my journey. I wish I could share this feeling of inner peace that I feel............

Ninth Lotus Flower

Ninth Lotus Flower - Samantha Rochard - Mixed Media

Ninth Lotus Flower  acknowledges that,
As a creative spirit, and all creative spirits
Need that pool of people who are understanding
and supportive.
We do not need a finger wagged at us and told "You have to face reality...."

All creative minds think differently, our focus is different. To keep on that constant treadmill which demands we keep up with this warped "reality" that the human race sees as life is torment to us.
Our spiritual connection is in creating, our passion is in creating, our reason for existing is creating. Its like asking the sun not to shine. All things which depend on the sun to shine will equally wilt.
If you have a creative person in your life, and prevent them from shining in their passion, you too will wilt. This is who we are..... this is what we live for. Take that away, and soon life becomes a dull and passionless place.....all for the sake of "reality."

Eighth Lotus Flower

Eighth Lotus Flower - Samantha Rochard - Mixed Media

Eighth Lotus Flower attempts shortcuts
To rework what was previously done
Our Shortsighted view
Cannot complete the process

So we attempt to fix life in its current state. Patch hurts, remove the confusion. But instead of cleansing, we replace it with another issue, another decoration. Like an addict who exchanges one vice for another, we believe we are better.......but no.......it isn't better......just less cluttered.

Seventh Lotus Flower

Seventh Lotus Flower - Samantha Rochard - Mixed Media
Seventh Lotus Flower shows
How we collect decorations for our life;
Till those decorations become a need in themselves
and obscure the substance of life itself.

The creation of Seventh Flower was different. In all the others I had a message to convey, prior to the drawing. In sitting down to do seventh, determined to continue the process and force it if I had to; I began to draw. In my mind it was :" Add this, add that. more design more swirl."
At the end of Seventh Lotus Flower, I stuck it up on the wall in contemplation. I opened my mind to the message and heard " See what little substance it has. There is so much decoration, and line here and swirl there, that the true substance has disappeared."
And indeed.....is this what we do to ourselves? Add so much decoration to our lives that the core elements for true happiness are lost to us?"
I hesitated to put this up. I did not like this at all. Words from the artist Robert Regis Dvorak rang out in my mind; "Only show your best work!" (Selling Art 101)
This was promptly followed by words from Julia Cameron in "The Artist's Way" , that the artist must give themselves permission to do bad work.
Because the purpose of this blog is the process, not the final work, I decided to put in in.
